2017 HIGHLIGHTS - NELSON BEER WEEK
MarchFest has announced the live music acts for its tenth craft beer festival. The strong line-up includes New Zealand's hip-hop soul queen, Ladi 6, festival favourites The Eastern and skanking ska band BattleSka Galactica. Supporting will be wacky ukulele artist Russ from Alaska plus cool Nelson acts Not Bruce Willis, Django Schmango and the Ragged Crow Morris.
MarchFest is also celebrating its tenth year by expanding craft-beer related events in the region to a whole week, with the announcement of the inaugural ‘Nelson Beer Week’ running from March 18 - 26th at venues around the region. Craft beer-related events at bars, restaurants, hop farms and even golf courses will allow Kiwi breweries from outside Nelson to get involved as well as local breweries. At least 14 brand new beers from local craft breweries will make their debut at MarchFest including brews from Dale's, Eddyline, Founders, Golden Bear, Hop Farm, Hop Federation, Lighthouse, McCashin’s, Moa, Mussel Inn, Renaissance, Sprig and Fern and Townshend’s. The commercial brewers will be joined by the winner of the MarchFest 2017 Home-brewers' Brew competition, Karl Summerfield, whose Saison beer will be commercially brewed for MarchFest. No stranger to this competition, Karl was part of a winning duo last year and this year has gone one better, taking out the prize all on his own.
Nelson Beer Week is a 9 day showcase of Kiwi Craft Beer embracing amazing local cuisine and fun events that are unique to Nelson in the lead up to the 10th MarchFest. Beer tourism is on the rise and already there is a dedicated group of MarchFest attendees who appreciate craft beer and love coming to Nelson. Nelson Beer Week is a chance for locals and visitors to explore beyond normal ‘beer experience boundaries’ for more than just a weekend.
Nelson Beer Week is aiming to bring together breweries, bars, restaurants, retailers and other businesses to promote Nelson and Tasman as a fabulous and fun destination for an annual week-long craft beer pilgrimage. Events will include Food and Craft Beer Pairings, tap takeovers, a Tahunanui Tuesday, the renaming of the Boathouse to The Brewhouse for a week, ‘Hops and Holes’ craft beer golf tournament and more. Nelson Beer Week (NBW) attendees can also pick up a “Beer Week Spotter Logbook” in which they can collect NBW stamps by participating in an event. Once 5 stamps are collected they will receive a special Nelson Beer Week commemorative item which can picked up at MarchFest on presentation of the Nelson Beer Week Spotter Logbook.
Nelson Beer Week also includes the New Zealand HomeBrewers’ Conference, which made its highly successful debut in 2016, taking place on Sunday March 26th.
